For our growing dynamic initiatives at the intersections of technology, culture and creativity, the College of Arts and Letters invites applications for a multidisciplinary team that embraces a design thinking approach dedicated to a common sense of values: creativity, teamwork, end-user focus, and curiosity. Successful candidates should be committed to engaging students in real-world problems within the larger cultural shift from a consumer culture to a creative society increasingly defined by mediated experiences. The ideal candidates will excel in their disciplinary fields. They will also analyze and theorize the larger questions posed by the ever-changing media landscape and its potential for creative community participation and positive social change. We are committed to embedding the creative disciplinary questions of how we author, design, and perform cutting-edge new media experiences within a larger social and cultural context. Those hired will support the College of Arts and Letters in its focus on shaping students who go out into the world and have an impact. In addition to collaborating in the development of College of Arts and Letters initiatives and in grant activity to support those initiatives, the new faculty will join the relevant vibrant departments (Art and Art History; Theatre; Writing, Rhetoric, and American Cultures) as described below.

Photo-Imagining Video
The Department of Art & Art History at Michigan State University (www.art.msu.edu) seeks a creative studio artist whose research and teaching is based primarily in Photo- Imaging, with additional accomplishments in Video. This is an academic year, tenure-system (open rank) or academic specialist appointment (depending on background and experience). The successful candidate should be collaborative-minded and committed to promoting contemporary photographic practice as a diverse discipline in which artists make innovative use of various lens-based processes. Applicants should possess knowledge of contemporary theoretical issues and historical trends in both still Photography and Video, be able to address the role of images in an ever changing media landscape and have an understanding of the applications of Photo media across the broad design/fine-art spectrum. Strong consideration will be given to candidates who work at the intersection of the critical and creative and demonstrate the intellectual capacity and creative ability to serve the next generation of Photo media artists. Qualifications: MFA or equivalent professional experience required. Applicants are expected to be professionally active artists whose studio practice demonstrates proficiency in both still and moving images. Commitment to ongoing artistic excellence should be clear as reflected in an established record of achievement which may include exhibitions, commissions, and publications. Successful candidates should possess the expertise to teach a range of photography courses including those that expand the definition of Photo media. Primary teaching responsibilities will include all levels of Photography with additional assignments in video courses in a studio art program that emphasizes a diversity of artistic approaches. Previous teaching experience at the collegiate level is desirable.
Interactive Media/Graphic Design
The Department of Art & Art History at Michigan State University (www.art.msu.edu) seeks a dynamic and creative colleague whose research and teaching focuses primarily on Interactive Media/ Graphic Design. This is an academic year, tenure-system (open rank) or academic specialist appointment (depending on background and experience). The successful candidate should be team oriented and committed to advancing the design discipline through the innovative use of evolving technologies and new media. Applicants should be passionate about creating a new generation of practitioners, demonstrate knowledge of historical and contemporary trends in the Graphic Design discipline, and be able to imaginatively and critically situate design practice in the current media-saturated landscape. Qualifications: Applicants are expected to hold a MFA, MGD, MDes, (or equivalent professional experience) and should be professionally active designers with a record of creative achievement that may include exhibitions, commissions, and/or publications. Successful candidates should possess the expertise to teach a range of courses in the Graphic Design Area with primary responsibility for courses in Web, Interactive, Time-based, and Motion Graphics Design. Previous teaching experience at the collegiate level is desirable.
Acting with a Specialization in Acting for Film and Mediated Performance
The Department of Theatre at Michigan State University (www.theatre.msu.edu) seeks to fill an academic year, tenure-system (open rank) or academic specialist appointment (depending on background and experience). The ideal candidate should have extensive hands-on experience in theatre with a graduate degree (MA, MFA or PhD) or commensurate professional experience. Responsibilities will include teaching and developing courses for the camera, new media acting, media direction for actors, acting for animation, and movement and vocal approaches in theatre and media. In addition, this person will collaborate in the multi-disciplinary study of live performance in animation and video. Additional responsibilities to include directing in the department's season, serving as the liaison between the College and the burgeoning film industry in Michigan, and spearheading a Detroit Showcase for actors, for film and television agents. Pursuit of grants/external funding desirable. Preferred qualifications include teaching experience in acting at the collegiate level, and/or professional experience as an actor in the field of new media production and/or film production; excellent communication, collaborative skills and an interdisciplinary perspective.
Specialization in Technical Direction and Show Control
The Department of Theatre at Michigan State University (www.theatre.msu.edu) seeks to fill an academic year, tenure-system (open rank) or academic specialist appointment (depending on background and experience). Qualifications: MFA (or the equivalent professional experience) and significant practical experience integrating new and innovative technologies with live performance. Experience in teaching at the collegiate level and additional expertise in areas of traditional media and theatrical design/technology desirable. Knowledge of theatrical trends and ongoing growth in area of specialization is expected. The successful candidate will develop and teach courses in cutting-edge systems design and show control as it relates to theatre technology, including touring. Based on experience, classes to be taught may include introduction to technical theatre, topics in production design, and technology classes. Additional responsibilities to include interdisciplinary collaboration with other units in research on film and new media. Pursuit of grants/external funding desirable.
Multimedia Writing & Video Composing
The Department of Writing, Rhetoric, and American Cultures (http://wrac.msu.edu) at Michigan State University seeks a colleague whose teaching and research focus principally on multimedia writing and video composing, with desirable subsidiary interests in global and cross-cultural contexts for multimedia writing and video composing and/or visual rhetoric. This is an academic year, tenure system faculty (rank open) or academic specialist appointment. The ideal candidate will work at the intersection of critical and creative studies and will bring enthusiastic willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues in the department and college. Within Writing, Rhetoric, and American Cultures (WRAC), the new colleague will contribute to the department's vertical writing curriculum that includes first-year writing, an undergraduate major in professional writing, and a graduate program in rhetoric and writing. The major area of teaching responsibility will be courses in multimedia writing and video composing; other expectations include consulting on multimedia and visual composing in curricular and co-curricular contexts; maintaining an active agenda of research and/or multimedia production; seeking external funding for projects; and contributing to university outreach. Qualifications: Applicants expected to hold a PhD or other terminal degree in rhetoric, writing, or a related field or (in the case of specialists) have equivalent professional experience. We seek colleagues with a record of scholarship and teaching or equivalent professional experience in at least two of the following areas: film, video, or audio-visual production and analysis; audio-visual media production with/in community and cultural groups; outreach and engagement involving new media technologies; multimedia composing in project-based courses; and social networking and content management work related to the digital humanities.
Digital Humanities
The Department of Writing, Rhetoric, and American Cultures at Michigan State University (http://wrac.msu.edu) seeks a colleague in Digital Humanities, Community Informatics, or Digital Media and Culture. We are interested in scholars who bridge the gap between critical and creative studies, and whose teaching and research is in one or more of the following areas: human-computer interaction; information architecture, cultural informatics, user-experience design; or new media arts and storytelling. This is an academic year, tenure system faculty (rank open) or academic specialist appointment. The ideal candidate will bring enthusiastic willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues in the department and college. Within Writing, Rhetoric, and American Cultures (WRAC), the new colleague will contribute to the department's vertical writing curriculum that includes first-year writing, an undergraduate major in professional writing, and a graduate program in rhetoric and writing. Depending on precise area of expertise, major teaching responsibilities will include such courses as web authoring and information/interaction design as well as courses that will contribute to new college initiatives in digital humanities; other expectations include an active research agenda, grant activity, and contribution to outreach and engagement.
