Assistant Professor Digital Media
The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University seeks to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor to teach and conduct research in digital media and to provide service to the academy and the profession.
The required qualifications for the position are a master's degree in journalism/mass communication or a related area and at least five years of professional experience in new/online media; possess full-range of multimedia skills.
The desired qualifications for the position include an earned doctorate in journalism or mass communication from an ACEJMC accredited institution, teaching and research experience in higher education and being bilingual in English/ Spanish; possess a strong visual design background.
The professional-oriented Cronkite School offers the bachelor of arts and masters of mass communication degrees and will launch a doctoral degree program in fall 2011. The school is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Arizona State University is a large Research I institution located in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
A leader in digital media education, the Cronkite School added more than 15 top journalists and scholars to the faculty over the last five years. The faculty includes former Washington Post Executive Editor Leonard Downie Jr., former CNN anchor Aaron Brown, former Minneapolis Star Tribune Editor Tim McGuire, BET Vice President Retha Hill, former Sacramento Bee Executive Editor Rick Rodriguez and digital media pioneer Dan Gillmor.
Students in the school's New Media Innovation Lab and the Knight Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship develop the next generation of digital media solutions. The school is the headquarters for the Carnegie-Knight News21 Initiative, a consortium of 12 of the nation's leading universities. And since August 2008, the school has been housed in a 22x,000 square foot state-of the-art journalism complex on ASU's downtown Phoenix campus, in the heart of the nation's fifth largest city and its twelfth largest media market.
Application deadline: October 31, 2010; if not filled, the 15th of each month thereafter until the search is closed.
