Public Policy: Department of Planning, Policy, and Design Position: Assistant Professor of Public Policy. The Department of Planning, Policy, and Design at the University of California, Irvine invites applications from exceptional scholars for a tenure-track, assistant professor position. The successful candidate will play a central role in initiating the newly established Master of Public Policy (MPP) degree, as well as develop a strong research profile in relevant areas of public policy. A Ph.D. in a policy-relevant field, including public policy, political science, anthropology, economics, sociology, urban planning, or related disciplines, is required. As the MPP is a high-profile collaboration bridging multiple campus units, there will be considerable interface with other departments, particularly in the School of Social Sciences. We seek candidates with demonstrated ability for intellectual leadership in their chosen area of policy, for example: the relationship between empirical research (qualitative or quantitative) and normative dimensions of public policy, new institutional designs and practices for deliberative policymaking, emergent public issues such as the globalization of risk, increasing vulnerability of the marginalized, governance of new technologies, and others. The Department of Planning, Policy and Design lies within the multi-disciplinary School of Social Ecology and has 17 full-time faculty members representing disciplines like public policy, political science, planning, health policy, economics, environmental management, and law. In addition to the MPP, the department also offers an undergraduate major in Urban Studies, a Master of Urban and Regional Planning degree and a Ph.D. in Planning, Policy, and Design. For full consideration, candidates should apply by December 15, 2010. The position will remain open until filled. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2011. Candidates should apply online at the link below and submit a curriculum vitae, a statement of research, a statement of teaching interests, representative publications, and arrange to have three letters of recommendation uploaded electronically.
