DIRECTOR, CENTRE FOR INNOVATION IN ART AND DESIGN EDUCATION
 
Reporting to the Vice President, Academic, the Director provides leadership for the Centre for Innovation in Art & Design Education (CIADE) and the Writing & Learning Centre (WLC). The Director is responsible for advancing excellence and innovation in teaching and learning at OCADU through the provision of curriculum development leadership, service and support to the academic units and graduate programs. The Director is responsible for providing leadership in the development and review of academic programs and quality assessment, advice and consultative services to faculty members and academic units engaged in program, curriculum and instructional design or re-design providing programs and services that support and develop faculty, and enhancing the learning process through the use of educational technology, the development of alternative delivery strategies, co-op learning and internships. The Director will lead annual and strategic planning cycles of curriculum development appropriate to OCADU’s status as a specialized University, integrating these into institutional and budget planning cycles. The Director will work in close collaboration with the Deans and Associate Vice President, Research & Associate Dean, Graduate Studies.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Spearhead the development of the CIADE in consultation with the Vice President, Academic, Deans and senior leadership
• Provide strategic and operational direction to student writing and learning services
• Lead annual and strategic planning cycles of curriculum development, integrating these into institutional and budget planning, working in close collaboration with the Deans, the Associate Vice President, Research & Associate Dean, Graduate Studies and the Senate
• Prioritize the use of limited resources for curriculum development activities University-wide in keeping with OCADU’s strategic plan in conjunction with the VP Academic, Deans and senior leadership
• In conjunction with the VP Academic provide academic leadership with respect to educational development programs for faculty 
• Provide expertise and guidance to the University community regarding curriculum development, review and reform including quality assurance processes, such as degree learning expectations and the institutional quality assessment process 
• Collaborate with the Associate VP Research & Associate Dean, Graduate Studies to integrate graduate learning into curriculum planning and quality assessment
• Promote scholarship, teaching currency and innovation 
• In conjunction with VP Academic and Associate VP Research & Associate Dean, Graduate Studies and the Deans support development of structures for interdisciplinary curriculum development as well as Faculty based programs
• Working with the Associate VP Research & Associate Dean, Graduate Studies plan professional development programs for teaching assistants and others 
• Assist the VP Academic, the Deans  and faculty with macro and micro curriculum analysis for program/ course reviews and development 
• In conjunction with the VP Academic and Deans ensure curriculum development funds are used efficiently and effectively 
• Act as a resource to the VP Academic regarding strategic planning and new programming areas
• Develop and manage the operations and budgets of the Centres 
• Provide support for incoming faculty, ensuring that their needs are met and that integration and retention occur
• Address needs of culturally diverse learning communities, including Aboriginal peoples, underrepresented groups, first generation students and students with disabilities
• Supervise staff in the Centres 
• Build and maintain close collaborative working relationships with leaders from various units and beyond
• Manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Work independently and as part of a team on various Centre, University and external committees
• Establish policies and internal processes that enhance the services of CIADE and the WLC 
• Develop a University wide e-learning strategy 
• Lead development of reflective and creative uses of technology that responds to divers e-pedagogical needs
• Manage online learning projects from end to end 
• Expand the services of the Centres and online learning within the University
• Represent the Centres within the University and beyond
• Develop resource plans (staff, space, budget, equipment, etc.) and allocate resources to meet the objectives and evolving needs of students and the University
• Lead annual business planning for curriculum development and the CIADE and in annual budget planning 
• Train, support, coach  and evaluate the performance of staff for continuous improvement
• Enable application of current research relating to best practices in learning theory in the context of art and design education
• Conduct innovative research in faculty development, art and design education, undergraduate and graduate teaching and student services
• Participate in institutional research planning in collaboration with Associate VP Research & Associate Dean, Graduate Studies and Research Committee
QUALIFICATIONS:

• PhD in Education, Educational Psychology, or a related field, or successful demonstrated leadership of curriculum and pedagogical transformation in art, design or media post-secondary environment. 
• Expertise enabling the application of educational psychology and teaching best practices in post-secondary education by faculty and others
• Multidimensional background in art/design, interactive multimedia, educational technology and education
• Experience in interdisciplinary program development
• Experience leading a faculty development centre’s programs and services
• Significant experience in leading curriculum development
• Significant experience in leading and facilitating institutional change, including administrative change
• Significant work experience facilitating dialogue among faculty in relation to the development of effective teaching and learning skills
• Extensive experience in pedagogically sound application of technology to teaching and learning
• Expertise in educational models, curriculum design, instructional development
• Demonstrated application of emerging pedagogies, such as Problem-based learning
• Extensive work experience leading design, development, and production teams consisting of web designers, editors, and technical staff for online learning courses and resources at the post-secondary level
• Strong record of achievement developing and teaching online learning courses
• Advanced skills using leading edge educational technologies 
• Ten or more years teaching experience at the post-secondary level
• Demonstrated experience managing multiple online learning development projects simultaneously
• Experience leading and managing change initiatives
• Demonstrated flexibility to multi-task and juggle multiple roles and demands simultaneously
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills, team player with ability to develop consensus, strengths in oral and written communication, and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of students, faculty and administration
• High level of initiative with a particular interest in working within the curricular context of a visual art and design educational university
• Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong skills in evaluating and managing staff performance
• Demonstrated interest and research in writing and learning centre services 
• Demonstrated ability of working culturally diverse teaching and learning environment
• Experience developing and managing budgets to achieve targets
• Ability to effectively manage financial and human resources
• Experience building successful partnerships with key service coordinators and staff
• Established research record in teaching and learning in higher education including online learning
