Emily Carr University of Art and Design invites applications for a full-time tenure track position of Assistant Professor in Critical and Cultural Studies dedicated to excellence in teaching and the theoretical/studio interplay critical to outstanding professional practice, starting August 2011.

Located in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, we attract over 1800 exceptional students to our art, design, and media undergraduate and graduate programs from over 60 countries worldwide. Steeped and highly successful in traditional visual art practice and research, Emily Carr is also generating great excitement with its design and media programs and its cutting edge digital facilities and research partnerships and opportunities. Emily Carr offers a wide range of studio programs grounded in a strong academic curriculum and with a significant focus on interdisciplinarity, community collaborations and sustainability. This program is informed by a rigorous complement of academic courses in art, media and design history, humanities, social sciences and sciences. These Critical Studies courses encourage students to realize their intellectual and creative potential and increase their academic knowledge.

We are actively searching for a for a full-time tenure track faculty member within the Faculty of Culture and Community to teach Visual Culture studies, and Media or Design Critical and Cultural Studies courses from introductory to Graduate studies, and be an active participant in the University community.

The successful candidate is expected to teach students at all levels, from Foundation to Graduate Studies. A commitment to Foundation teaching is a key requirement of this position with the ability to lead large lecture classes. In addition to teaching, faculty are expected to contribute to the fabric and future of our community including curriculum development and planning, participating on administrative committees, providing graduate student supervision, supporting student advising and events and being actively engaged in the Emily Carr community.

Candidates will have a Ph.D. in one of the following disciplines: media studies, cultural studies, design studies or art, design or media history, and demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence, with a minimum of two years related post secondary teaching experience and an exemplary academic practice.

Letters of application should address the candidate’s expertise in the areas of teaching, professional work, and community service. The application should include a current curriculum vitae, copies of theoretical writing or publications and, if applicable, a CD or DVD containing images of recent work (maximum 20) presented as a PowerPoint or PDF file with a printout of thumbnail images submitted, catalogues and reviews (to a maximum of 5 each).
