Reference No: 491730
Department: School of Humanities
Work type: Continuing

Overview:
The School of Humanities is a research-productive School with 50 staff, three undergraduate programs (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Communication, Bachelor of Journalism), three coursework Masters programs, and an active RHD culture. It is currently undergoing an exciting period of revitalisation and expansion. Strong growth in student numbers together with generational change in the staff profile have created openings for five new positions in the study and practice of communications, based primarily on our Gold Coast campus.

The School is committed to creating well-rounded graduates with a diversity of strengths in communications. In addition to a broad array of courses in media and communication studies, it has professional streams in journalism and public relations. These streams are articulated in a number of courses, providing students with the opportunity to think outside the box and expand their career options. The School has an outstanding research profile in journalism with strengths in political journalism, community journalism and the third sector. This is reflected in teaching programs that encourage our students to make a difference in their communities and the world. The public relations stream offers opportunities to move outside the narrow corporate sector by including a full suite of skills also relevant to political, cultural and third sector careers.

In addition to our internal programs, the School offers an online Bachelor of Communication and Master of Communication through Open Universities Australia. These programs comprise a wide range of courses in public writing, media studies (including new media) and visual communication. With strong growth in numbers, they are an increasingly important part of our teaching and are slated for major revision and updating over the next two years.

The School of Humanities has close links with the Griffith Centre for Cultural Research (GCCR), directed by Professor Andy Bennett. The GCCR provides funding and other support for members researching in the broad fields of historical and contemporary culture. Membership is contingent upon research productivity.
