Position Responsibilities
The Director of the Institute for Distance and Distributed Learning
reports to the Associate Provost for Distance Learning and Summer
Sessions and serves as a member of the distance learning and summer
sessions leadership team along with the director of Academic Summer
Sessions, the director of Administration and Operations, and the
Associate Provost.
The Director of the IDDL provides leadership and management to the
Institute for Distance and Distributed Learning ensuring a holistic
approach to eLearning through a collaborative cross-university
approach. The IDDL is comprised of three units: Instructional Design,
Development and Support; eLearning Systems Development and
Integration; and Research and Assessment of Teaching and Learning in
Electronic Environments. Each unit's manager reports directly to the
Director.
The Director works with the University's colleges and academic
departments to evaluate online and distance learning opportunities and
is responsible for university-wide distance and distributed learning
program planning; course development and delivery; eLearning systems
development and integration with university systems; student and
faculty support services; and course and program assessment. The
Director ensures quality synchronous and asynchronous teaching and
learning experiences and provides leadership in the development of new
and scalable models of eLearning. The Director recommends distance and
distributed learning policies; seeks resolution of eLearning barriers
and issues; contributes toward the preparation of the IDDL budget and
effectively manages it; and ensures a team-based and participatory
work environment to accomplish organizational goals and objectives.
As part of the distance learning and summer sessions leadership team,
the Director contributes toward the strategic planning efforts for
eLearning, ensuring that these efforts are congruent with the
University's strategic plan. Similarly, the Director helps maintain
the continuous planning and improvement process for distance learning
at the university.
The Director serves on university committees and represents the
university to internal and external audiences and at state, national,
and international meetings.
Required Qualifications
Candidates should have specific experience working in a distance
learning environment; demonstrated higher education experience related
to a wide diversity of faculty, staff, students and community members;
possess outstanding leadership, management, and interpersonal skills;
a demonstrated ability to work in a diverse team environment;
demonstrated experience managing a complex organization, including
responsibility for staff and budgets; Candidates must be able to
demonstrate a proven commitment to supporting and enhancing a
culturally rich and diverse learning environment.
Preferred Qualifications
A terminal degree is preferred. Experience working with faculty in the
design, development, delivery and assessment of effective eLearning
course is preferred. Teaching experience at the college/university
level, including experience developing and teaching online or other
technologically-mediated courses, is also preferred. At least five
years experience managing a complex organization, including
responsibility for staff and budgets
