George Mason University, Cultural Studies Ph.D. Program invites  
applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor  
position starting fall 2008. Ph.D. in-hand by time of appointment,  
substantial scholarly work in media and visual culture, and a  
commitment to the theory and practice of interdisciplinary cultural  
studies are required. The successful applicant also will have  
research specialties that augment existing strengths of the program,  
especially research on new media, globalization, political economy,  
gender and sexuality, and critical race studies. In addition to  
working closely with graduate students, s/he will be prepared to give  
an advanced undergraduate course on globalization and culture.  
Members of underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.
The first stand-alone interdisciplinary Ph.D. in cultural studies in  
the United States, the program at George Mason provides comprehensive  
post-master's training in the contemporary field. Program faculty  
members are dedicated to helping students develop a record of  
research, scholarship and instruction appropriate to the development  
of careers in academic and applied settings. The program places about  
90 percent of its graduates in tenure-track academic positions. Part  
of the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, George Mason  
University is Northern Virginia's public university, serving some  
30,000 students. Other interdisciplinary graduate programs at Mason  
include international public affairs, conflict analysis and  
resolution, environmental science and public policy, and the program  
in public policy. George Mason is also home to the center for history  
and new media as well as numerous nationally ranked Ph.D. programs.
