The University of South Carolina seeks a tenure-track Assistant
Professor in the Humanistic Study of Contemporary Science or
Scientific Technologies for a tenure home in either the Department of
History or the Department of Philosophy, with a possible joint
appointment. The area of scholarly expertise we seek is in either the
history or philosophy of contemporary science or technology, with the
geographical focus open. We expect the appointment to begin in Fall
2008. The successful candidate’s research and teaching interests will
complement the University’s emphases on the societal interactions of
emerging technologies, and, more generally, the history and philosophy
of science, technology, engineering, medicine, and the environment.
Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the physical, life
or engineering sciences, the commercialization and globalization of
science, science and technology policy, ethical issues in science and
technology, the public history of science, ethnographic or lab
studies, visual representation in science, or computer simulations.
Viable Candidates will be able to teach courses in either history or
philosophy of science or technology, as well as serve other
departmental teaching needs as appropriate.
Many opportunities exist at USC for interdisciplinary cooperation. The
nanoScience and Technology Studies research group has faculty and
graduate student members from over a dozen different departments,
including History, Philosophy, English, Art, Journalism, Chemistry,
Physics, Biology, Medicine, and Mechanical, Civil and Environmental
Engineering. The person hired into this position will have the
opportunity to help with the development of an institutional focus on
the study of emerging technologies.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence
in both research and teaching, and will have the Ph.D. in a relevant
discipline (including interdisciplinary science studies programs) at
the time of appointment. ABD will be considered. Deadline for receipt
of applications is December 3, 2007.
