Creative Commons provides free tools that let authors, scientists,
artists, and educators easily mark their creative work with the
freedoms they want it to carry. You can use CC to change your
copyright terms from "All Rights Reserved" to "Some Rights Reserved."
Launched in December 2002, Creative Commons has developed a Web
presence and framework of licenses and software that allows creators
to share their work with the public on generous terms, while
retaining the rights they wish. Creative Commons includes divisions
that focus on art and culture, science, and internationalization. It
has offices in San Francisco, Berlin, Johannesburg and Boston.
Creative Commons is seeking an Executive Director for CC Learn, a new
division that will focus on education, broadly defined — from
kindergarten to graduate school, to lifelong learning. The mission of
this new division will be to promote vigorous networks of Open
Educational Resources: materials offered freely and openly for
educators, students and self-learners to use, modify and re-use for
teaching, learning and research. This new entity, provisionally
titled CC Learn, will have as one of its main aims the promotion of
interoperability among existing open repositories and portals. By
interoperability, we mean removing the barriers — whether from
incompatible licenses, technologies or site design — that make it
hard to combine, experiment with, and modify the wealth of open
educational resources that already exist. Our goals are to promote
the virtuous cycle of use, experimentation, and reuse, to draw more
educators and students into the community of open educational
resources, and to increase public awareness of the value of those
resources. CC Learn will also attempt to stimulate the creation of
technical tools and social norms that empower teachers and learners
to make use of open resources, and to serve as a resource for
educators and policy makers about legal and technical issues
surrounding open educational resources.
The Executive Director will report to Creative Commons CEO, and will
work with Board Members and advisors on a Steering Committee.
Major duties and responsibilities:
* Developing and implementing the Education agenda with the Creative
Commons Board of Directors;
* Overseeing hiring and work of paid staff; Establishing and
directing collaboration among paid staff and Board members;
developing and managing a network of international partners and
volunteers;
* Planning and executing meetings of educators, lawyers, policy
makers, and representatives of government agencies and businesses to
define need, set goals, and develop an agenda;
* Establishing effective working cooperation and collaboration on
shared goals and projects with groups and individuals around the world;
* Fulfilling requirements and milestones of an existing grant and
fundraising for the future.
Educational Requirements:
* Advanced degree in education, law, or related field.
Experience and Skills:
* The successful candidate will be a highly motivated individual who
has significant achievement and experience in education and the
public policy issues relating to it and who can bring energy and
commitment to maintaining a private sector pace and workload for this
nonprofit cause.
* The position requires the ability to develop and maintain strong
working relationships with educators, associates and collaborators,
paid and volunteer, on-site and physically remote.
Applicants for the Executive Director position should have demonstrated:
* Proven leadership experience and the ability to work
collaboratively and motivate colleagues;
* Excellent written and verbal communication, managerial, diplomatic,
and negotiating skills;
* Ability to set goals, prioritize, develop strategy, implement
programs, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines;
* Familiarity with educational technology and Web-based environments;
* Familiarity with a broad range of issues of concern to the
educational community, familiarity with their legal and regulatory
environments;
* Experience with open content and with fundraising is a big plus.
Areas of work we expect to be important include:
* Developing consensus around "best practices" for open educational
resources and repositories;
* Overseeing the development of technical tools that enhance the
interoperability and utility of open educational resources;
* Advocating for open educational resources in national and
international arenas;

interests.
