Assistant Professor, Higher Education
The University of Maine invites applications for an academic year,
tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor in Higher Education
in the College of Education and Human Development beginning September
1, 2007.
Responsibilities: We are seeking a colleague to serve the doctoral
program in Higher Educational Leadership and the master's program in
Student Development in Higher Education with a specialty in
organizational theory and leadership in higher education. We seek
candidates whose educational and experiential background prepares
them to (1) teach graduate courses specifically addressing colleges
and universities as complex organizations in a multicultural society
(including seminars in higher educational leadership and dynamics of
change in higher education), and one or more related courses such as
policy, law, international comparative higher education, history of
higher education, economics of higher education, and the community
college; (2) supervise graduate student research; (3) engage in an
agenda of scholarship that will serve college and university leaders
and faculty in institutional growth and improvement; (4) actively
engage with the higher education community nationally and within the
state and region to connect the graduate program and the
practitioners it serves; and,
(5) collaborate in the coordination, and advancement of the Higher
Education programs at the University of Maine as they extend through
a geographically large, rural state. Additional functions include
regular faculty responsibilities such as student advising,
collaborative program development and administration, and committee
work. Given our state-wide commitment, some teaching may be off-site
and/or use distance technologies.
Qualifications: Earned doctorate in Higher Education or related field
with expertise related to colleges and universities as complex
organizations in a multicultural society and related expertise in one
or more areas listed above; applied experience in higher education;
strong understanding of the structure and functioning of colleges and
universities; strong interpersonal and written communication skills;
an understanding of and demonstrated commitment to diversity and the
dynamics of privilege; quantitative and qualitative research skills,
and a clearly articulated research agenda; strong collaboration
skills; programmatic creativity; computer literacy and commitment to
the use of new technologies in teaching and learning; and a
commitment to student-centered approaches to teaching and learning.
The Institution and the Program: The University of Maine is the only
land- and sea-grant institution and the primary doctoral degree
granting institution in the state.
The College of Education and Human Development is committed to
serving and improving education in the state, region and nationally
through partnership in teaching, research and service with those
involved in the enterprise. The Higher Education program primarily
serves full-time master's students preparing for careers in student
affairs, and doctoral students who are primarily mid-career
professionals in colleges and universities. Additional information
