The Temple University Media Education Lab is seeking a research
fellow for the 2007-2008 academic year to collaborate on research
related to copyright and fair use issues for media literacy
educators. Copyright issues directly affect educators in K-12, higher
education and non-school settings across all distribution platforms.
At the present time, copyright exceptions for educational use may or
may not apply to activities that are now becoming central to media
literacy education. For example, student media technology projects
undertaken as homework may not be protected by the classroom use
exemption. A student-produced media project displayed on a class Web
page, blog, or wiki extends beyond the classroom walls and, as a
result, could open up potential liabilities. Because of concern about
potential litigation, students and teachers from elementary school to
university may be discouraged from creating materials using remixing
practices and may have a negative impact on the quality and character
of media literacy education in the United States. The research fellow
would work collaboratively with faculty at the Media Education Lab
and the Center for Social Media at American University on the
preparation of research reports based on extensive interview data
with media literacy educators. The research fellow will also
contribute to the development of publications for scholarly, peer-
reviewed journals. This opportunity would be ideal for an individual
with interests in communication law and policy, K-12 education, and
media literacy. Ph.D. in media studies, education or sociology
preferred, although exceptional candidates near degree completion may
also be considered. Temple University is an equal opportunity, equal
access, affirmative action employer committed to achieving a diverse
community. Women and minority candidates are encouraged to apply.
Please send resume, writing sample, and names of three references to:
