Thomas Edison State College, one of 12 senior public colleges and
universities in New Jersey, enrolls approximately 13,000 adult
students from around the world. The College currently offers 16
associate, baccalaureate and master's degrees in more than 100 areas
of study. Students may choose from a Master of Science in Management,
Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, Master of Science in Nursing,
Master of Science in Human Resources Management, and undergraduate
degrees in liberal arts, business, applied science and technology,
nursing and human services. Thomas Edison State College provides
flexible, high-quality, collegiate learning opportunities for self-
directed adults. The work environment is dynamic, innovative and fast-
paced.
Description
In conjunction with the Dean of the School of Professional and
Continuing Studies, the Assistant Dean will explore new potential
markets, conduct or supervise needs assessment and will participate
in the formation and development of new programs for the School. The
Assistant Dean will represent the School to various operating units
of the College to ensure the maximum integration of the School's
functioning with the College infrastructure. These units include:
Management Information Systems, Office of Admissions, Office of the
Registrar, Marketing, the Bursar and the Controller's Office. The
Assistant Dean will represent the School and the Dean to the
community at large. He/she will participate with the Dean in
developing corporate clientele for the School. He/she will manage
publications and website for the School. He/she will provide
administrative support for existing and ongoing programs and other
duties as assigned.
Examples of Work
Preparing reports for administration and external regulatory agencies
Serving as liaison to other college departments and administrative
offices
Representing the College and the School through committees, meetings
and conferences
Monitoring Datatel for course and program maintenance, report
generation and database accuracy
Conducting research on student concerns and recommending the
appropriate course of action to resolution
Coordinating Assessment activities across the degree programs in the
School of Professional and Continuing Studies
Locating properly credentialed mentors as needed for courses, Prior
Learning Assessment, Demonstration of Currency and other areas, and
coordinating with the Mentor Affairs Department to improve systems
and generate reports
Managing publications for academic programs and monitoring the
website and program materials to insure information about the School
of Professional and Continuing Studies
Managing other related projects, duties and responsibilities as
assigned by the Dean of the School of Professional and Continuing
Studies
Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of the philosophy and practices of higher education and
familiarity with the standards, curriculum and polices pertaining to
adult learning.
Knowledge of the current issues and trends in adult learning,
distance learning and online education
Ability to work with professional and support staff, and the
community at large
Ability to work at a distance with students, mentors and other
professionals
Ability to use technology to communicate, synthesize information and
prepare reports
Requirements:
Education: Graduation from an accredited college with a Master's
Degree; Ph.D. is preferred or the equivalence as determined by the
appointing authority.
Experience: Four years administrative experience in a collegiate or
university setting.
