ASU is seeking to build capacity in policy informatics. We are
interested in recruiting two core tenure-track positions (rank open)
faculty members, particularly at the assistant professor level,
beginning in the fall semester 2007 who are versed in techniques,
methods, and theories related to the storage, retrieval, sharing, and
optimal use of policy data, information, and knowledge for problem
solving and decision making. We are particularly interested in
information choice, use, and effectiveness in policy decisions.
Faculty will be housed in either the School for Computing and
Informatics or the School of Public Affairs, or both, and will work
with senior faculty colleagues at ASU to establish a Center for
Policy Informatics. In time, we expect to build a curriculum in
policy informatics as a core area of study in the School of Public
Affairs and the School of Computing and Informatics AND as a joint
degree, with dual concentrations in business, nursing, planning,
political science, economics, and other fields.

Participating units include:
The School of Computing and Informatics (http://sci.asu.edu) is
housed on the Tempe campus in the Ira A. Fulton School of
Engineering. SCI encompasses the Computer Science and Engineering
department, a new Biomedical Informatics department and a variety of
informatics programs. SCI has 40 faculty, 900 undergraduate students,
350 graduate students (including 160 Ph.D. students). Six faculty
members are jointly appointed between SCI and a variety of
disciplines and institutes inside and outside ASU (arts and media,
psychology, anthropology, The Biodesign Institute @ ASU and the
Translational Genomics Institute in Phoenix.). The School has strong
research and academic programs and is a major player in ASU’s New
American University vision.

The School of Public Affairs in the College of Public Programs
(http://spa.asu.edu) located at the Downtown Phoenix campus
contributes to the development of multiple, useful, and realistic
models of governance with accompanying processes for extended civic
engagement and the training of a new generation of urban leaders
capable of addressing questions raised by the rapid growth of urban
citistates. The new demands on public leadership in the context of
global urban governance are unprecedented in complexity and scope,
and demand new approaches in research, teaching and practice. The
School ranks in the top twenty-five public administration schools
nationally, and offers the only program in the region accredited by
the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and
Administration (NASPAA). It offers MPA, MPP, and PhD programs, as
well as a new undergraduate major in Urban and Metropolitan Studies.

Another major unit relevant to the Center for Policy Informatics is
the Decision Theater (http://dt.asu.edu). The Decision Theater at
Arizona State University is one of the first research centers in the
nation to focus on immersive, collaborative policy decision making.
The Decision Theater provides a 260 degree, 3D visualization
environment coupled with advanced simulation and collaborative
decision making tools. It is staffed by an interdisciplinary team of
undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and
dedicated professional personnel. Sponsored projects are supported
by state and local government, Federal agencies, international
organizations, and private companies. The director is R.F. Shangraw
whose faculty appointment is in the School of Public Affairs.

Applications must include the following: letter of interest,
Curriculum Vitae, and the names, addresses and phone numbers of three
professional references. Review of applications will begin on March
1, 2007; if not filled, weekly thereafter until the search is closed.
