School of Information Management and Systems
The School of Information Management and Systems (SIMS) at the
University of California-Berkeley invites applications for a tenure-
track position at the Assistant Professor level beginning in fall
2006. Applicants should have received, or be about to receive, a
doctoral degree in a related discipline or professional field.
SIMS is the most recently formed school on the Berkeley campus. We
are an interdisciplinary professional school that graduates master's
students who work in human-computer interaction, document
engineering, project and product management, management consulting,
information architecture, web services, and library and information
services. Graduates of our PhD program are teaching in places such as
the Heinz School of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon
University and the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard
Law School. We have also started to offer undergraduate courses in
fields such as search and new media.
Our faculty members come from diverse fields, including political
science, sociology, economics, law, computer science, and information
science. We share the commitment to building a new field of
scholarship and practice that addresses the design of new genres of
information and media, information policy and ethics, and the
relationships among information/ information systems and individuals,
organizations, and society. Candidates should possess appropriate
expertise and demonstrated research excellence and be committed to
working in a multidisciplinary setting. Relevant professional
experience is also desirable. Fields of research include, but are not
limited to:
• Information design and architecture;
• User-centered design of information systems and services;
• Relationships among information, information technology,
information systems, and individuals, organizations, and society;
• Information assurance, including the quality, security, and privacy
of information;
The successful applicant will be expected to establish a quality
research program and to teach both graduate and undergraduate courses
in his/her area of specialty as well as to provide service to the
School and University. Applications should include a CV, select
