PROFESSOR(C20NN) OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR(C30NN) OR ASSISTANT PROFESSOR 
(C40NN)

Degree and area of specialization:
Ph.D. in information library and information studies or related  
field. Ph.D. required by start of appointment, August 2006. Tenure- 
track candidates should have research publications commensurate with  
experience or evidence of ability to carry out a research agenda, and  
potential for a demonstrated excellence in teaching.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Tenurable candidates must have demonstrated excellence in research  
and teaching. Experience in mentoring required. Demonstrated record  
of securing external funding a plus.

Principal duties:
Faculty are expected to conduct research within information studies,  
broadly construed; teach two courses per semester; advise master's  
students and supervise doctoral research. All candidates should be  
practiced in use of technologies for teaching and learning, committed  
to diversity, prepared to seek opportunities to extend the School's  
funding opportunities and thriving collaborations, and to contribute  
to its service mission.

The School's faculty has strengths in studying information in its  
social and cultural contexts including information seeking and user  
behavior, children's services and school library media, web content  
and information management, government information management,  
intellectual freedom, information policies, and historical study of  
libraries, archives, print culture, information technology and  
information labor. To complement these strengths, SLIS seeks a  
candidate with teaching and research expertise in one or more of the  
following areas: digital preservation, archives, or librarianship;  
medical informatics/librarianship; organization and retrieval of  
information; scholarly communication; and public services, reading,  
literacy. Applications from outstanding candidates in other areas  
will also be considered. All applicants will be expected to  
contribute to the core curriculum as well as their area of expertise.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Library and Information  
Studies (SLIS) seeks three exceptional candidates with a demonstrated  
commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service to join  
our rapidly changing and dynamic learning community as Assistant,  
Associate, or Full Professor beginning August 2006. (A starting date  
of January 2006 may be considered for one position.

SLIS has approximtely 200 masters and 20 doctoral students and  
collegial faculty and staff. It is equipped with a newly remodeled  
instructional computer laboratory, a usability lab, and its own  
library in addition to the resources of the University Libraries. It  
cooperates actively with the University Library System, the  
Cooperative Children's Book Center and the Wisconsin Historical  
Society's library and archives. It is home to a large and vital  
Continuing Education Service, the Center for the History of Print  
Culture in Modern America, and the UW Information/Communication  
Tecyhnology and Policy Research Cluster. It is located in a modern  
classroom building overlooking beautiful Lake Mendota in one of the  
world's finest universities and in one of the United States' most  
livable cities.
